When many friends asked us about composting technology, a question was that it is too troublesome to turn the compost windrow during compost fermentation, can we not turn the windrow?
The answer is no, compost fermentation must be turned over. This is mainly for the following reasons:
1. The compost turning operation can make the fermentation of the material more uniform, and the turning operation can also play the role of smashing the material.
2. Turning the compost can provide sufficient oxygen inside the compost so that the material will not be in an anaerobic state.
At present, the high-temperature aerobic fermentation process is advocated in the composting process. If the compost is anaerobic, the material will produce an unpleasant ammonia smell, pollute the environment, damage the health of operators, and also cause nitrogen loss. Turning the heap can avoid anaerobic fermentation inside the compost.
3. Turning the compost pile can release the moisture inside the material and speed up the evaporation of the moisture of the material.
4. Turning the compost can reduce the temperature of the material: when the internal temperature of the compost is higher than 70°C (about 158°F), if the compost is not turned over, most of the medium and low-temperature microorganisms in the compost will be killed. The most important thing is this High temperature will speed up the decomposition of materials, and the loss of materials will be greatly increased. Therefore, a temperature higher than 70°C is unfavorable for composting. Generally, the temperature of composting is controlled at about 60°C (about 140°F). Turning is the effective measures to reduce the temperature.
5. Turning the heap can speed up the decomposing of the material: if the heaping is well controlled, the decomposing of the material can be accelerated and the fermentation time can be greatly shortened.
It can be seen that the turning operation is so important to compost, so how to carry out the turning operation?
1. It can be controlled by both temperature and smell. If the temperature is higher than 70°C (about 158 degrees Fahrenheit), it should be turned over, and if you smell the smell of anaerobic ammonia, it should be turned over.
2. When turning the pile, the inner material should be turned outward, the outer material should be turned inside, the upper material should be turned downward, and the lower material should be turned upward. This ensures that the material is fully and evenly fermented.
